WRX986SIHZ specifics — where the filter actually lives
Like every WRX-series French door, the WRX986SIHZ carries its ice maker inside the left refrigerator door — that keeps the top shelf clear, but it also means the ice bin and the water-filter bay share that same door. Open the left door past 90° and the Filter 1 bay sits at the top of the door wall, beside the ice bin.
Two quirks owners hit: the dispenser interlocks while the door is open, so flush a new filter with the door closed; and slower ice right after a swap is usually trapped air, not a fault — dispense 4 glasses to prime the line before the first harvest.
Bay location in one line: open the left door — top of the door wall, next to the in-door ice bin. Quarter-turn release cap faces you; no tools, no bypass plug.
WRX vs WRF — what the prefix tells you
In Whirlpool’s French-door lineup, WRX marks the versions with exterior ice and water — the ice maker moves into the left door, and the filter bay follows it there. WRF French-door and bottom-freezer models keep ice in the cabinet and mount the Filter 1 bay in the top-right of the fresh-food compartment. Both share the same EDR1RXD1 cartridge. Model years 2015 – 2019 per the official efficiency listing window.
Swap it in 5 minutes

- Open the left refrigerator door — the Filter 1 bay sits at the top of the door wall, beside the in-door ice bin.
- Turn the release cap counter-clockwise and pull the used filter straight down.
- Line up the arrow, push the new filter firmly into the bay until it seats.
- Run 4 glasses of water through to clear carbon fines. Reset the light (hold FAST COOL 3 s).

WRX986SIHZ filter questions
How do I reset the filter light after changing it?
On the WRX986SIHZ panel: press and hold the FAST COOL button for 3 seconds until the filter indicator turns green. Unlike other Whirlpool models, this one does not use a dedicated “Filter Reset” key — on early 2015 units it is buried in the settings menu.
Why is the filter light still red after I reset it?
Re-run the reset with the left door closed: hold FAST COOL for a full 3 seconds until the indicator blinks green. If it stays red, the cartridge isn’t seated — reopen the left door and push the filter until it clicks into the bay, then retry.
Does this model need a bypass plug when the filter is out?
No. The WRX986SIHZ automatically bypasses when the filter is removed, so the water dispenser keeps running unfiltered. Some older KitchenAid twins in this family need the bypass cap — check the bypass plug guide.
How many gallons does one EDR1RXD1 filter last in this fridge?
The Filter 1 cartridge is rated for 200 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first. On a four-door WRX986SIHZ feeding both the dispenser and the in-door ice maker, a typical household of four reaches the 6-month clock before the gallon cap.
Will an off-brand filter damage my Whirlpool fridge?
No — the Filter 1 bay is a simple mechanical push-in slot with no RFID chip or flow meter. Any NSF-certified EDR1RXD1-form filter fits identically, and your warranty is unaffected under the Magnuson-Moss Act.
Why is the OEM filter $59.99 when yours is $14.99?
Same coconut-shell carbon block, manufactured in a facility that also runs NSF 42/53 certification for major brands. You are not paying for the water — you are paying Whirlpool’s margin and retail shelf costs. Ours ships factory-direct.
