How do I know which company built my Kenmore refrigerator?

Are Kenmore Elite filters different from regular Kenmore?

No as a parts line — Elite is a trim level, not a manufacturer. Elite fridges are built on the same four platforms (106/253/363/795), and the cartridge is whatever the builder used in that chassis. What makes Elite tricky is that Sears sourced Elite generations from different builders over the years, so two Elite fridges from different eras can take entirely different filters. Run the prefix check on the model plate and the ambiguity is gone.

How often should a Kenmore filter be replaced?

Follow the builder’s cycle: 6 months is the standing rule across all four platforms, with the underlying cartridges rated in the 200–300 gallon class. The Sears-era advice of “when the light comes on” translates to a calendar countdown like every other brand — it measures time since the last reset, not water quality. Can I just buy a Whirlpool/Frigidaire filter for my Kenmore?
