Two GE quirks matter before you order. First, the 2017+ generation split: XWFE replaced XWF on new machines and the two are not interchangeable — XWFE fits XWF bays one-way, older bays won’t take XWFE. Second, the premium RPWFE line carries an RFID authentication chip that rejects unchipped cartridges outright — it’s the only chip-locked bay in the GE range and it dominates the Café and Monogram badging. Hotpoint twins use the same bays with different model codes.

Which water filter does my GE refrigerator take?

Start with the age. Machines built before 2017 almost always use the MWF twist-in bay (4,899 models in our library) or the MSWF/GSWF variants on specific lines. Machines from 2017 onward moved to the XWF bay, which XWFE then replaced — XWFE fits XWF bays, but not the reverse. If your fridge is a Café or premium Profile from the last few years, check for the RPWFE cartridge with the RFID chip. The model plate is inside the fridge compartment, usually on the left wall; type it into the finder for an exact match.

What's the difference between XWF, XWFE and RPWFE?

Three cartridges, three generations. XWF is the original 2017-era slim bay. XWFE replaced it — same mounting, updated flow geometry, and the replacement only works one direction: an XWF bay accepts XWFE, but an XWF cartridge won’t seat in newer XWFE-only machines. RPWFE is a different animal entirely: it carries an RFID authentication chip that handshakes with the fridge, and an unchipped cartridge is rejected with an error message. RPWFE machines (many Café and Monogram units) are the one place in the GE range where cartridge choice is genuinely locked.

Are Hotpoint filters the same as GE filters?

Yes — Hotpoint is a GE Appliances badge, and the refrigerators share the same bay systems with different model numbers. A Hotpoint model that matches a GE platform uses the identical MWF or GSWF cartridge; the cross-reference works model-to-model. GE Appliances itself has been owned by Haier since 2016, which doesn’t change the parts — the MWF, XWFE and RPWFE lines carried forward unchanged through the ownership transition.

How often should a GE water filter be replaced?

GE rates the MWF at 300 gallons or 6 months, and the XWFE generation at roughly the same cycle — whichever comes first. The fridge’s filter light is a calendar countdown, not a flow meter, so heavy households (constant ice production, hard water) should treat 5 months as the real ceiling. The RPWFE line is the exception in one respect: the chip tracks cartridge identity, and some machines nag sooner after a third-party reset. When in doubt, pull the cartridge and check for scale or slime on the end caps — visible loading means the media is done regardless of what the panel says.

Can I use an older GSWF or MSWF number in my GE fridge?

Only if that’s the bay your machine actually has — the codes are similar but the cartridges are not cross-compatible. GSWF is the older, shorter cartridge for top-freezer and compact models; MSWF is a taller, higher-capacity cartridge for a different mounting. Neither fits an MWF bay and neither is “upgraded” by the other. If your paperwork lists a superseded number, the safe path is to search by refrigerator model number, not by the old part number — our fit library maps 5,801 GE-family models to their current cartridge.
