MERV 8 Air Filters
The everyday workhorse rating — and the filter most American homes were designed around. Under ASHRAE Standard 52.2, a MERV 8 pleated filter must capture ≥70% of 3–10 µm particles (mold spores, pet dander, dust mite debris) and ≥20% of 1–3 µm, at the lowest pressure drop of the three common residential ratings. No allergies, no smoke concerns → this is your tier, replaced every 90 days.

Step One: Pick Your Size — The 12 Most-Ordered
MERV 8 runs in every standard slot — 1-inch, 2-inch and 4-inch. These twelve carry their own size hub pages (same MERV selector, actual-size card, brand compatibility). 20x20x1 and 20x25x1 lead MERV 8 orders every year. Size matters more than brand: a filter that doesn’t seal your slot filters nothing.

MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13 — Where This Tier Sits
Three ratings, one ASHRAE table. The real difference between them is the E1 submicron floor (none → ≥20% → ≥50%) and the pressure drop your blower pays for it. All efficiency numbers are published minimums — a floor each filter must clear, not a marketing average.

How MERV 8 Filters Work
MERV rates worst-case capture across three particle-size bands simultaneously — the rating is set by the lowest qualifying band, not the highest. Two rows below: what the efficiency floor actually buys you, and why this tier is the gentlest thing you can do to your blower.
Mechanical Capture: Interception and Impaction Do the Work
A MERV 8 pleat is mechanical media — the rating comes from fiber geometry, not a manufacturing-applied charge. Two of the four filtration mechanisms dominate at this tier:
The honest boundary: some retailers quote “~90%” for MERV 8 — that’s the E3 column quoted alone. The flattering column. Fine dust at 1–3 µm is caught at the ≥20% floor, not thoroughly; submicron smoke is not what this rating is for. A dust-loaded MERV 8 does catch more submicron particles than a clean one — by accident, not by design. For smoke and PM2.5 the honest answer is MERV 13.
Why MERV 8 Is the Safe Tier for Older Blowers
Your blower was sized for a total external static budget — typically ~0.50″ WG for a residential furnace — and the filter is only one line item spending it (the coil and ductwork spend most of it). A clean MERV 8 at 0.10–0.15″ WG is nearly free; a clean 1-inch MERV 13 can eat half the budget before dust arrives.
That matters most on PSC single-speed motors (most systems over ~10 years old): they deliver less air as resistance climbs, which is how coils freeze and limit switches trip. And loading multiplies resistance — a MERV 13 three weeks overdue can restrict more airflow than a MERV 8 three months overdue. This is why “set it and forget it” households belong at MERV 8, and why the 4-inch media cabinet is the real escape hatch: MERV 11 in a 4-inch cabinet runs at lower resistance than MERV 8 in a 1-inch slot (3–4× the media area).
One label check before you buy anywhere: if the box says “MERV 8” and nothing else, look for a published MERV-A value — electrostatically charged media can drift toward the lower mechanical rating as the charge dissipates. The two-minute version of that trap is in MERV Rating Explained.
Buying MERV 8 in Three Decisions
Rating decided — three choices left. Each step below links to where that decision lives.
Size (nominal Inches)
Read the old filter’s label, or measure the actual filter (not the rack) and match to the nearest standard nominal — the actual runs ~⅜” small. Full walkthrough: how to measure.
Thickness: 1" or 4"
1-inch = the standard slot, 90-day life. A 4/5-inch media cabinet at MERV 8 runs at the lowest pressure drop of any configuration — if your cabinet takes it, that’s the value play.
Pack Size
90-day cycle means 4 filters a year in a 1-inch slot. Singles are for trying the fit; 12-packs take the per-filter price down to $4.99 — three years of air in one box.

The Most Common MERV 8 Failure Is Forgetting
A MERV 8 filter six months overdue has paid back its lower price in blower strain — loading multiplies resistance, and the static budget doesn’t grow. MERV 8 Questions, Answered Straight
For homes without allergies, respiratory conditions, heavily shedding pets, or smoke exposure — yes. MERV 8 captures the visible particulate load (dander, spores, dust, lint) at the lowest pressure drop and price of the three common residential ratings, and it’s the tier most base HVAC systems were designed around. It is not a targeted response to wildfire smoke or submicron pollution — that’s MERV 13 territory.
MERV 11 adds a submicron floor (≥20% of 0.3–1 µm, where MERV 8 requires nothing) and raises the 1–3 µm minimum from 20% to 65%. In practice: MERV 11 catches pollen fragments, fine dust, and pet allergens more thoroughly, at somewhat higher pressure drop and price. If anyone in the house has allergies, that E1 floor is the whole argument. Full breakdown with the blower-motor check: MERV 8 vs MERV 11.
Every 90 days in a standard household; every 60 days with pets or during heavy-use seasons; monthly checks during renovation or wildfire season (dust loads spike). The visual test settles it — no media visible through the dust means now. Set it and forget it with the Filter Calendar.
Partially. MERV 8 captures pet dander (5–10 µm) and hair effectively — the visible half of the problem. The allergenic proteins that actually trigger reactions (Fel d 1, Can f 1) ride on smaller fragments, where MERV 11’s E1/E2 floors do meaningfully better work. One dog, no allergies → MERV 8 is fine. Allergic household with pets → MERV 11.
